Dubai Airport

Dubai International Airport is the airport serving the city and emirate of Dubai. Furthermore, it is the biggest airport in the United Arab Emirates as well as a very important transformational hub in the Middle East. The airport is the 13th busiest in the world by passenger traffic and serves more than 41 million people every year. The airport has significant importance as an international transfer point and is ranked number 4 in terms of international passenger traffic. Moreover, it is the 7 busiest cargo airport with 1.9 million tones of goods passing through it.

The airport is situated in the Al Garhoud district 4 kilometers away from the city of Dubai. The airport is handled by the Emirates’ Department of Civil Aviation and is the home airport of the UAE’s airline- the Emirates. As of 2010, there are 6,000 flights done by 130 airlines going to 220 destinations through the airport. The Emirates Airline is responsible for 60% of the traffic in the Middle East and occupies 40% of traffic through the airport in general. Furthermore, the airport is home of the Flydubai low cost carrier.

In 2008 the airport opened the new Terminal 3 that is designed exclusively for the purposes of the Emirates Airline. There will be a special Concourse 3 that will hold the Emirates Airbus A380- the world’s biggest passenger plane. The new terminal covers 1.5 square kilometers and is the world’s biggest building by floor space. Furthermore, Dubai International is planned to be supplemented by the newly built Al Maktoum International Airport that will begin operations in 2011. The new 140 square kilometers airport will help the older one accommodate the growing needs in the longer-run.
